A bit about Merin:

With a career spanning across multiple industries- residential and commercial property, retail and recruitment, to name a few - I have experienced firsthand how valuable transferable skills are when transitioning into new sectors. For me, this broad range of exposure to different environments has enabled me to develop strategic thinking, communication and relationship building. I believe the ability to adapt and apply these transferable skills to different industries is a great strength.

I wanted to share some of the things I have considered or done since joining The People Experience Hub and taking on a different challenge in a new industry.

Why transferable skills matter:

It is easy to get caught up in thinking that you need direct experience in a specific field. Communication, problem solving, project management and teamwork are only a handful of skills valued across a multitude of roles and sectors.

Tip: Take a moment to put pen to paper and map out the skills you have developed in your previous roles. Then, consider whether they align with the new sector you are entering. You will likely find several synergies that you hadn’t noticed before.

Understanding your new industry

Transitioning into a new sector means you will need to learn about industry specific challenges, trends and market insight. Researching is key to becoming educated with the language and practices common in your new role. Being proactive and learning is a really good way of doing this.

Build on your network

One of the most important things you can do is connect with those in your industry-colleagues, potential clients and people who are in a similar position as you.

Tip: You can attend webinars, in person networking events or engage with podcasts. LinkedIn is also an excellent tool for connecting with great voices.

Embrace a growth mindset

Adopting a growth mindset is essential when starting any new role, particularly when the industry is new to you too. Being open to learning, asking questions and proactively seeking knowledge will set you up for success.

Tip: Focus on learning, building relationships and understanding the key challenges and how you can support. Celebrating progress and small wins is a great way to keep up momentum.

Taking a role based on transferable skills rather than industry specific experience isn’t just possible, it can be a strategic advantage. By focusing on what you can bring to the business in terms of core competencies, adaptability and fresh perspectives, you position yourself as a versatile and valuable candidate and bring value beyond traditional industry knowledge.

If you are considering a career shift, remember: your skills and experiences are more versatile than you think!

Why your transferable skills are more important than industry experience:

Making a career change is a huge decision. You may look at job opportunities and feel daunted by the prerequisite of relevant industry experience or question whether your current skill set is enough to make the jump. However, in today’s rapidly evolving job market, transferable skills can matter just as much- if not more- than direct industry related experience.

Regardless of whether you are looking to change industries, take on a new role or a fresh challenge, it is important to recognise the core skills needed to success and assess how your own experience aligns.

Focus on the skills, not the job title

When transitioning into a new industry, it is easy to get caught up in job titles or required experience and feel like your profile isn’t the right fit. Changing your perspective to instead focus on the skills you have developed and how they translate across different roles can be helpful.

Tip: Think about your past roles in terms of the skills you developed rather than just the tasks you performed. Did you manage client relationships, solve complex issues, work with data? These are all transferable skills and applicable to many roles and industries.

Your ability to adapt sets you apart

One of the most critical skills in any job is adaptability. Businesses constantly evolve and require processes, systems and people that can change in line with the requirements of the business. Your ability to learn, adjust and thrive in new environments can be a huge asset.

Tip: When applying for a new role, highlight examples from your previous positions where you had to adapt to changes or learn something new. This can show potential employers that you are proactive in embracing change.

The value of a fresh perspective

Transformation and change drive business growth. With change, fresh perspectives are a huge advantage. If you have worked in a different industry, you may be able to view issues through “fresh lenses” and bring new ideas and approaches that those with trinational experience may overlook.

Tip: Position yourself as someone who offers diversity of thought. Empathy, emotional intelligence, critical thinking and commercial awareness are all helpful skills to assist with this.

At The People Experience Hub, we strongly believe in the power of transferable skills and the fresh perspectives they bring to a business. Welcoming individuals from diverse backgrounds allows us to build a team that thrives on innovation, adaptability, and creative problem-solving.

If you’re considering a career move or wondering how your skills translate to a new industry, we encourage you to embrace the opportunity. Your ability to learn, adapt, and bring new insights can be just as valuable—if not more—than direct industry experience.
